oven: Pisé

J'ai été invité en tant qu'artiste en résidence à Polymorphe corp. to initiate the construction of a rammed earth (aka pisé) bread oven.

Pisé avec une équipe de +/- 6 personnes, mélanger, transporter, tasser la terre dans un coffrage préalablement fabriqué.
Construction d'un toit en troncs d'acacia et de châtaignier, recouvert de tuiles trouvées sur place.
Pour construire avec du pisé, un mélange de terre sableuse et granuleuse est fortement compacté. J'ai décidé d'utiliser ce système de construction en raison de la disponibilité locale des ressources et de sa méthode de construction exigeante en main-d'œuvre.
Cette méthode n'est pas techniquement compliquée et, contrairement à d'autres types de construction en terre, elle ne dépend pas d'un sol riche en argile. Cette méthode permet de créer des murs épais et à forte inertie.
I chose it as a labour intensive method to invite participation and collaboration – the construction was only possible as a collective effort, by gathering different people from from different backgrounds to collaborate. A colorfoul mix of people, backgrounds and generations worked as the oven materialized in unforseen and often improvised ways. Improvisation and decisionmaking on the spot is a big part of my work and allows it to adapt and react to its context.
With the help of many volunteers, the team on site and a one-week ‘chantier participatif’, the construction work was completed after 18 days.
